Medica today announced the launch of the Medica Research Institute as a non-profit company that will serve as the research arm within the broader organization. Built on the principals of systematic investigation, some potential areas of study include health services research, comparative effectiveness research and clinical trial studies.

“Medica’s decision to form a research center is significant, its activities will directly strengthen and advance Minnesota as a leading state in applying research and innovation to healthcare delivery”

Evidence-informed decision making and support of that approach to the practice of health care has been a cornerstone of Medica’s business model. The newly founded Medica Research Institute will help formalize these efforts and create new opportunities to expand research potential within Medica and throughout the healthcare industry.

“Medica acknowledges that health care is complex and that tough questions persist within and about this industry, and the Medica Research Institute is designed to apply resources to study those tough questions through research and collaboration that impact healthcare innovation,” said Kristina Bloomquist, director of the Medica Research Institute. “We also are committed to sharing our findings so that all who interact with the healthcare system will benefit from them.”

Projects undertaken by the Medica Research Institute will involve Medica researchers and partnerships with other researchers at the regional, national and, potentially, international level. Collaborations within the research community will allow the Medica Research Institute to build upon the organization’s strengths and share its expertise with the broader community.

“Medica’s decision to form a research center is significant, its activities will directly strengthen and advance Minnesota as a leading state in applying research and innovation to healthcare delivery,” said Kent Bottles, president of the Institute for Clinical Systems Integration, an independent, non-profit organization that helps its members provide evidence-based, best clinical practices to patients in Minnesota and surrounding states.

Said Bruce Blazar, M.D., Director, Clinical and Translational Science Institute – University of Minnesota: "We’re pleased Medica is making this commitment as it creates new opportunities for academia and health care to leverage its resources and knowledge. In doing so, outcomes will be discovered to offer timely translation into activities with proven health benefit.”

The Medica Research Institute is a nonprofit that is in the process of seeking tax exempt status as an organization described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code. To learn more about the Medica Research Institute and its activities visit: www.medicaresearchinstitute.org
