Coffs Harbour sports course to reduce injuries

In an effort to reduce sporting injuries, Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) NSW will hold an accredited Level 1 Sports Trainer course in Coffs Harbour on May 22 and 23.

Every year over one million Australians are injured playing sport.

Yet this figure could be worse without the efforts of sports trainers, who devote their time to managing and preventing injuries at local sporting clubs.

Paul O’Dwyer, SMA NSW Education Manager, says the Level 1 Sports Trainer course provides participants with the appropriate training, qualifications and experience that is vital to ensure a safer sporting environment for all participants.

“Safety in sport is paramount. Having properly trained safety personnel on the sidelines is a key part of providing a safe environment, to prevent injuries, and limit the impact of injuries on players and their clubs,” said Mr O’Dwyer.

“The Level 1 Sports Trainer course provides a great introduction into the management of sports injuries.

“Not only does the course deliver information on how to prevent sports injuries but it also includes skills on sports taping, nutrition, injury transportation and injury management.

“The course is extremely valuable for everyone involved in sport and is open to people from all sporting codes,” said Mr O’Dwyer.

The Level 1 Sports Trainer Course is on May 22 and 23 from 8:30am to 5:00pm each day at Sawtell RSL – First Ave Sawtell and is open to parents, coaches, club officials, health professionals or anyone interested in sport.

The cost to attend is $285 with a special rate of $265 for pensioners and students. All course materials will be provided and participants will receive a Level 1 Sports Trainer Manual, Workbook and Sport Trainer CD ROM.
