This is a request for comments regarding proposed rules of the Leonardo da Vinci Prize for reduction of premature cancer death which aim to 1) ensure that judgment for the best project is a result of logical reasoning, sound calculations and scientific merit and 2) eliminate the possibility of favoritisms that do not comply with this goal.

Experimental data (published by WHO, reported on April 24, 2009 in The New York Times) demonstrates that over the past 50 years, reduction in cancer death has been recorded as a mere 5%, while for heart disease for the same period the reduction was 64%, for stroke 74%, and influenza and pneumonia 58%. Cancer is costing you over $750 per year per capita. Direct medical expenditures related to cancer have increased to approximately 100 times that of 50 years ago, while the cost of primary food in the U.S. for the same period has increased only 4 times. Data also show that early diagnosis has the probability to save lives in 90% to 98% of cases.
