DSS, Inc., a leading provider of software development, integration, project management, implementation and support of VistA, today announced that its customized VistA Chemotherapy Manager (VCM) system is now live and in production at the San Francisco VA Medical Center.

“As a company that values patient safety as much as our partners, we look forward to working alongside the VA to enhance the quality of care in both Hematology and Oncology”

The San Francisco VA Medical Center, which services more than 310,000 veterans living in Northern California, selected VCM in an effort to meet the unique and meticulous decision support, ordering and treatment management needs of cancer care.

"As a company that values patient safety as much as our partners, we look forward to working alongside the VA to enhance the quality of care in both Hematology and Oncology," said Mark Byers, President and CEO of DSS. "With this new tool, providers can offer evidence-based cancer treatment to veterans while reducing patient length of stay, expense and risk."

The VCM system will allow the San Francisco Medical Center to:

  • standardize and automate complex ordering by the Oncology department;
  • minimize adverse drug effects with accuracy verifications and warnings; and
  • enhance communication across the continuum of care with interdisciplinary, real-time patient information updates.

The VCM software integrates seamlessly with VistA, the Department of Veterans Affairs' integrated EHR platform, and its Computerized Patient Records System (CPRS) database. DSS has worked closely with the Medical Center since August 2011 to further test and adapt the solution to reflect the established workflow and individual preferences of the facility.
