Bob L. Shull, M.D., gynecologist and director of fellowship training in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive pelvic surgery at Scott & White Healthcare in Temple, Texas, has received an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG). He has served as a mentor to a number of Australian gynecologists and been invited to Australia on a number of occasions for lectures and to perform surgery demonstrations. He was also a guest lecturer at the RANZCOG Annual Scientific Meeting in Melbourne, Australia in November 2011.
A global leader in his field, Dr. Shull has played an important role in the vaginal approach to management of pelvic organ prolapse, a disorder affecting about one-third of women. Alongside Professor Ajay Rane, Dr. Shull serves as co- patron of the Urogynaecologic and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery Society of India - the first urogynaecological society in India.
"Dr. Shull has made a significant contribution in research in the area of vaginal surgery and education of not only gynecologists in the U.S., but on an international level," said Andrejs E. Avots-Avotins, M.D., Ph.D, chairman of the board directors at Scott & White Healthcare.
Dr. Shull is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and currently Professor of the Division of Gynecology and Chief of the Section of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Scott and White Hospital - Temple and Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine.
Dr. Shull served as president of the American Urogynecologic Society in 1996-1997 and president of the Society of Gynaecological Surgeons in 2001-2002. Other honors held by Dr. Shull include: president of the Texas Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists; president of the North American Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society; president of the Society of Gynaecologic Surgeons; reviewer of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology; associate examiner of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynaecology; on the editorial board of the Journal of Pelvic Surgery and reviewer of the New England Journal of Medicine and the International Urogynaecology Journal. Dr. Shull served as examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology for approximately 12 years.
In 1994, Dr. Shull was co-investigator for a research project titled "Randomized Prospective Comparison of Laparoscopic-Burch Urethropexy with Standard Transabdominal Burch Urethropexy for the Treatment of Genuine Stress Incontinence." He has also published book chapters and authored and co-authored articles in peer and non-peer reviewed publications. In recognition of his work, Dr. Shull has received a number of awards, including a Certificate of Merit Award from the Central Association of Obstetricians - Gynaecologists for "Bilateral Attachment of the vaginal cuff suspension" (Shull BL, Capen CV, Riggs M, Kuehl T, Chicago Illinois, October 1992) and Outstanding Manuscript from the American Urogynecological Society's Annual Meeting for "The squirrel monkey: An animal model of pelvic relaxation" (Coates KZ, Galan HL, Kuehl TJ, Shull BL, San Antonio, Texas, November 1993).
