Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) is teaming up with the City of Tampa, VM Ybor
Neighborhood Association, and KaBOOM! to build a one-of-a-kind,
multi-generational playground at Tampa's Ragan Park. More than 200
volunteers will gather in Tampa's East Tampa neighborhood on Saturday,
Aug. 11 to build the unique play space in just one day.
In addition to the playground in Tampa, host of this year's Republican
National Convention, Humana will also build a playground in Charlotte,
N.C., host of the Democratic National Convention. The company will
announce details of the Charlotte playground build later this spring.
Because Ragan Park serves thousands of Tampa families, Mayor Bob
Buckhorn is excited about the new playground, especially the
multigenerational aspect of the project.
"Our strength as a city lies in the quality of our neighborhoods,
specifically our parks and playgrounds," Mayor Buckhorn said. "I know
the residents of East Tampa, especially those living near Ragan Park,
will be grateful for the investment. The convention may last only a
week, but Humana's commitment to our community will provide a lasting
legacy."
The RNC will host its 2012 Convention in Tampa from August 27-30. The
DNC will host its convention in Charlotte from September 3-6. Humana is
teaming with KaBOOM! on both playground-build projects; KaBOOM! is the
nation's leading nonprofit dedicated to saving play and has built more
than 2,000 playgrounds across North America.
The customized playgrounds will be funded primarily by Humana, one of
the nation's leading health and well-being companies, and will be
designed by local kids and their families at upcoming "Design Day"
events.
"We've partnered with KaBOOM! on 11 playgrounds over the past year and
we can't wait to build this one in Tampa," said Mike McCallister,
Humana's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "Humana has more than
2,500 employees working in the Tampa Bay area so we're a big part of the
community. We're delighted to be able to give back in this way as we
pursue our dream to help people achieve lifelong well-being."
Humana and KaBOOM! will work together with the VM Ybor Neighborhood
Association and volunteers to build a space with senior-focused and
adult elements - including fitness stations and walking paths - to
promote good posture, balance and flexibility. The playground will also
feature traditional, kid-friendly equipment to create a truly
multigenerational space.
"KaBOOM! is honored to assist in building a playground that will benefit
children and their families in Tampa's Ybor City area," said KaBOOM!
Founder and CEO Darell Hammond. "Every child deserves a great place to
play and building a space where their family can join them will have a
greater impact on the family and community."
