Drexelbrook develops Universal IV RF admittance-based level sensor for pharmaceutical, biotech industries

NewsGuard 100/100 Score

Typically, when level sensors are autoclaved for sterilization, the sensor housings are disassembled prior to the autoclave process, so they do not get ruined in the process. The removal of those items is time consuming and frequently not easy.

Drexelbrook Universal IV RF admittance-based level sensor

Drexelbrook, a world leader in level measurement technology, developed the Universal IV an RF admittance-based level sensor especially suited for easy intrinsically safe level measurement applications such as those found in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. It provides an ideal level measurement solution for applications that require primary level sensors to be sterilized.

The Universal IV sensor features a Triclamp process mounting along with a quick disconnect option to wiring connections. This allows the sensor to be quickly and easily removed from the vessel by disconnecting electrical and process connections.

The main housing body of the Universal IV level sensor consists of a rugged 316LSS construction, including a 316LSS cap with a retaining chain to prevent loss of housing. An EDPM O-ring seals protects a 6-pin connector to ensure that any foreign material or moisture from the electrical connections is kept out during the autoclave process.

The Universal IV level sensor carries a 3/8 inch OD TFE Teflon sensing element that is custom made to a user-defined insertion length. All process wetted parts of the Universal IV are made from TFE Teflon and 316LSS. In addition, a crimped 316LSS inactive section placed below the Triclamp mounting eliminates bacteria-retaining crevasses between a Teflon® sensor rod and the process mounting.

In cases where the entire vessel needs to be autoclaved after a process run, the Universal IV level sensor’s innovative design enables it to survive while remaining installed inside the vessel throughout the full autoclave process.

This unique feature makes the Universal IV an ideal choice for permanent installation on vessels that require continuous autoclaving, since the sensor does not need to be removed from the vessel and is not damaged by repeated autoclaving.

The Universal IV’s temperature sensor is rated from -65° C to +175° C (-85° F to +347° F).
