To get rid of bacterial pyrogens, depyrogenation, also known as dry heat sterilization, employs very hot air that is heated to temperatures over 350 °C (600 °F). These extremely high temperatures are achieved in depyrogenation tunnels, which are extremely hot ovens.
Pharmaceuticals are stored in glass vials placed within the tunnel and travel through various heat zones. This exposes the vials to intense, dry heat, which eliminates pyrogens.

All dry heat sterilizers undergo a thorough inspection and validation procedure as a regulatory requirement and to ensure that the tunnel is operating as intended.
