Mini-Psych School 2010 program to focus on mental health in children, youth

For the past five years, the Douglas Mental Health University Institute has been offering the Mini-Psych School, the only public education program of its kind in Quebec. This year, the program will be focussing on mental health in children and youth.

CRA appeals to FDA for name change allowance in high fructose corn syrup labeling

In an effort to help clarify the labeling of food products for consumers, the Corn Refiners Association (CRA) today petitioned the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to allow manufacturers the option of using 'corn sugar' as an alternative name for high fructose corn syrup.

Prematics, the leader in e-prescribing and care communication services, today announced a multi-year contract extension with Availity LLC, a national leader in health information exchange. Availity offers Prematics' e-prescribing services under the CarePrescribe private label. Per the terms of the agreement, Prematics will continue providing e-prescribing services to Availity through 2013, and add its Care Communication services for existing and future CarePrescribe users.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Connecticut to move from North Haven to Wallingford

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Connecticut (Anthem) announced today that they are moving their headquarters from North Haven to Wallingford in 2011. The company has signed a ten year lease with property landlord Workstage-Connecticut, LLC for space in the 300,000-square-foot office building, the Campus at Greenhill, located at 108 Leigus Road. The relocation plan will be in two phases; the first occurring in Sept. 2011, and the second and final phase in Sept. 2012. In all, Anthem will occupy 217,764 square feet of the campus.

More adults washing hands in public restrooms

In the latest observational study sponsored by the American Society for Microbiology and the American Cleaning Institute- (formerly The Soap and Detergent Association), 85% of adults washed their hands in public restrooms, compared with 77% in 2007. The 85% total was actually the highest observed since these studies began in 1996. The results were announced at the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, an infectious disease meeting sponsored by the American Society for Microbiology.

The majority of Kaiser Permanente caregivers voting in a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election that starts this week have pledged to vote for Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers-West (SEIU-UHW), according to member-organizers across California who have collected pledge cards from their co-workers.

Struggles lower-income older Americans face during recession

An AARP report released today for the first time paints a picture of the struggles lower-income older adults are facing during the recession. The AARP Closer Look June 2010 survey found that nearly six in 10 Americans 45+ who make less than $25,000 a year say they are either "not at all" or "not too" confident they will have enough money to pay medical and living expenses in retirement, compared to 36 percent of higher income adults.

The families of dying children who are covered under Medicaid or the Medicaid expansion Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) will no longer face the choice of stopping curative treatments in order for their terminally ill child to receive quality end-of-life care from hospice.

Public reporting of quality information helps consumers choose the right physician: Study

When looking for a new physician, patients are often encouraged to select those who are board certified or who have not made payments on malpractice claims. Yet these characteristics are not always a good predictor of which physicians will provide the highest quality medical care, according to a new study from the RAND Corporation, a nonprofit research organization, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

SAMHSA to unveil results of 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) will unveil the results of the latest (2009) National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) at a press conference on Thursday, September 16. The annual survey is the largest of its kind, and is the government's primary vehicle for determining how many persons are abusing illegal drugs, pharmaceuticals, alcohol and tobacco.

AMCP supports legislation to prohibit financial agreements for delaying marketing of lower-cost generic drugs

The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) supports the inclusion of legislative language similar to S. 369 — the Preserve Access to Affordable Generics Act — in appropriations legislation now under consideration by the Senate. S. 369 would prohibit financial agreements between brand-name and generic pharmaceutical manufacturers to delay the marketing of lower-cost generic drugs.

Emergency physicians to present research studies at Research Forum 2010

The risks associated with boarding admitted patients in the emergency department – including patient mortality – as well as proposed solutions will be key themes of Scientific Assembly, the annual meeting of the American College of Emergency Physicians. In addition, emergency physicians will present more than 450 research studies during 2010 Research Forum, the premier, annual scientific research event focused on the latest advances in the practice of emergency medicine.

Survey highlights safety concerns of patients crossing borders for infertility treatment

The European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) and the International Federation of Fertility Societies (IFFS) are concerned that the safety of patients crossing borders is no longer assured due to lack of uniform clinical and safety standards between the different countries. Additionally patients returning home often face legal and medical complications, as local health services take on the responsibility for treatment initiated abroad.
