David Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco, Calif., has been selected as the 2010 recipient of the NIDA Avant-Garde Award for HIV/AIDS Research for his proposal to study the mechanisms of latent HIV infection.

ALIAS research project to initiate elderly care through robots

A partnership among 20 European states, the European Union and a number of private enterprises has launched a three-year, 3.87-million-euro project to make robots capable of serving as adaptable, interactive, and above all safe assistants for elderly people. The research project, known as ALIAS, places special emphasis on maintaining social networks, warding off feelings of loneliness and isolation, and increasing activities that may protect and enhance cognitive capabilities.

MSKCC to open new 7,745-square-foot outpatient chemotherapy center in Brooklyn

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) today celebrated a new outpatient chemotherapy center, which is scheduled to open later this month, pending approval from the State Department of Health. The 7,745-square-foot facility, called the Brooklyn Infusion Center, will provide leading-edge chemotherapy services to current MSKCC patients who live in or near Brooklyn — which amounts to more than 15 percent of MSKCC's patients currently being treated in Manhattan.

In a newly published USGS study of cyanobacterial blooms in Midwest lakes, taste-and-odor compounds were found almost every time cyanotoxins were found, indicating odor may serve as a warning that harmful toxins are present.
