Arizona and Nevada Governors reject AGs' advice, join suit against new health law

The Associated Press/Boston Globe: "The governors of Arizona and Nevada say their states will join 14 others suing the federal government over health care reform. Gov. Jan Brewer announced Arizona was joining the suit Tuesday night. She signed a bill April 1 that gave her the authority to skirt the state's Democratic attorney general, Terry Goddard, who declined to sue on the state's behalf.

Queensland Health pay bungle continues

Either you get overpaid or you don’t get paid at all, that’s how Queensland Health’s casual staff seem to feel. Last week a payroll system which was blamed for overpaying the Queensland Health Staff was replaced with a new one. The new system cost $40 million to develop, but in the opinion of the staff is worse than the old one. A number of them have not been paid at all.

Low-skilled workers to perform initial blood donor screening: ONA, CFNU question decision

The Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) has joined the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) in questioning the decision of federal health minister Leona Aglukkaq to allow Canadian Blood Services to conduct a pilot project to replaces nurses with low-skilled workers for initial blood donor screening.

Sitting down on the job has its advantages. New data from The University of Kansas Hospital finds that patients perceive doctors who sit down during their hospital room visits stay longer than doctors who stand during the visit – even when doctors who sit don't stay as long as doctors who stand.

Actual cost of blood 37% higher than previously estimated

A new blood transfusion cost analysis study published in the April 2010 issue of Transfusion, a peer-reviewed academic journal, shows that when all of the complex cost factors leading up to and after a red blood cell (RBC) transfusion are considered, the actual cost of blood is substantially higher than previously estimated.
