CDC data shows frequent binge drinkers more likely to report suboptimal self-rated health

Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that excessive drinking is responsible for approximately 79,000 deaths annually in the United States. Binge drinking accounts for more than half of those deaths. A new study has looked at the frequency of binge drinking in relation to drinkers' own perceptions of their overall health status.

SAGES issues new practice guideline for surgical treatment of GERD

High oxygen delivery after postcardiac arrest leads to higher rate of death in hospitals

Patients who have excessive oxygen levels in arterial blood (hyperoxia) following resuscitation from cardiac arrest have a higher rate of death in the hospital than similar patients without arterial hyperoxia, according to a study in the June 2 issue of JAMA.

In the meantime, the federal government wants states to create temporary high-risk pools through which people with cancer, multiple sclerosis and diabetes who have been uninsured for at least six months can buy affordable coverage.
