KAPIDEX to be marketed as DEXILANT in the U.S.

Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc. announced today that KAPIDEX™ (dexlansoprazole) will be marketed in the United States under the new product trade name DEXILANT™ (dexlansoprazole). The product is indicated for heartburn associated with symptomatic non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the healing of erosive esophagitis (EE) and the maintenance of healed EE.

FDA's 5-year NCE exclusivity grant to VYVANSE: Court upholds decision

Shire plc, the global specialty biopharmaceutical company, announces that the United States District Court for the District of Columbia ("Court"), following extensive briefing by the parties and an oral hearing, has upheld the decision of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") to grant 5-year New Chemical Entity ("NCE") exclusivity to lisdexamfetamine dimesylate-currently marketed by Shire U.S. Inc. for the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder under the name VYVANSE(R).

GSK's Japanese subsidiary begins voluntary recall of Poligrip products containing zinc

Today, the Japanese subsidiary of pharmaceutical giant, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), announced that it would begin a voluntary recall of Poligrip products that contain zinc in that country Friday. The company's decision followed just three reports of adverse health effects in consumers of the product, sold in Japan as Poligrip EX.

FDA approves CSL Behring's Hizentra for PI

CSL Behring announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted marketing approval for HizentraTM, Immune Globulin Subcutaneous (Human), 20% Liquid, for treating patients diagnosed with primary immunodeficiency (PI). A once weekly immunoglobulin (Ig) replacement therapy, Hizentra provides effective protection against infection by maintaining a steady and normal level of immunoglobulin in the body.

Heartburn drug Kapidex to be marketed under new name Dexilant

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a name change for the heartburn drug Kapidex (dexlansoprazole) to avoid confusion with two other medications – Casodex and Kadian. Effective in late April 2010, Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America Inc. will market Kapidex under the new name Dexilant.

SpePharm Holding acquires global rights to Savene from TopoTarget

SpePharm Holding, BV today announced the acquisition of the worldwide (with the exception of North and South America) rights to Savene® from TopoTarget A/S (Copenhagen, Denmark). As part of the acquisition SpePharm will also take on the European sales force of TopoTarget. Savene®, which has been marketed by TopoTarget since its approval by the EMEA in July 2006, is the only approved product for the treatment of extravasations, or leakage out of the blood stream, of certain commonly used anticancer drugs known as anthracyclines.

Mosaic vaccines show promise in reducing HIV spread

Two teams of researchers-including Los Alamos National Laboratory theoretical biologists Bette Korber, Will Fischer, Sydeaka Watson, and James Szinger-have announced an HIV vaccination strategy that has been shown to expand the breadth and depth of immune responses in rhesus monkeys. Rhesus monkeys provide the best animal model currently available for testing HIV vaccines.

Researchers have demonstrated the safety of a potential vaccine against mesothelioma, a rare cancer associated primarily with asbestos exposure. The vaccine, which infuses uses a patient's own dendritic cells (DC) with antigen from the patient's tumor, was able to induce a T-cell response against mesothelioma tumors.
