FDA grants marketing approval for Elitek

Sanofi-aventis U.S. announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted marketing approval for Elitek (rasburicase) to be used for the initial management of plasma uric acid (PUA) levels in adult patients with leukemia, lymphoma, and solid tumor malignancies who are receiving anti-cancer therapy expected to result in tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) and subsequent elevations of plasma uric acid.

Depression becomes more difficult to treat the longer it goes undiagnosed or undertreated

A new survey of 2,001 adults living with depression revealed that despite being diagnosed for an average of 12 years, many unknowingly took actions that could have sabotaged their chances of getting well. Furthermore, on average, it took about six years for respondents to seek diagnosis from a health care professional, suggesting these adults may have been coping with depression for as long as 18 years.

Since Congress declared October “National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month” one year ago, more than 250,000 Americans have suffered SCA. For too many, the underlying cause was Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), an inherited disease that affects one out of 500 Americans. What makes it all the more troubling is that early diagnosis of HCM through simple and inexpensive screening can reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death.
