Cellzome, GSK form second major alliance to develop new anti-inflammatory drugs

Cellzome today announced that it has formed a second strategic alliance with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). This new collaboration gives GSK exclusive access to Cellzome's proprietary Episphere(TM) technology in the emerging field of epigenetics as applied to immunoinflammatory disease. Epigenetic mechanisms play a key role in controlling immune cell differentiation and inflammatory gene expression during an excessive inflammatory response.

March designated as 'National Autoimmune Diseases Awareness Month'

On the evening of March 4, 2010, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution designating March as "National Autoimmune Diseases Awareness Month" and supporting efforts to increase awareness of autoimmune diseases and increase funding for autoimmune disease research. The Senate resolution (S.RES.372) was introduced by Michigan Senator Carl Levin on December 8, 2009.

Rush University Medical Center develops WISHFIT program to help pre-menopausal women reduce visceral fat

Under a $7.1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, Rush University Medical Center is developing a novel program, called WISHFIT, to help pre-menopausal women reduce visceral fat through a sustained increase in physical activity and reduction in stress.

Study finds sizeable position for Actemra in rheumatoid arthritis treatment paradigm

Results from a study conducted by Majestic Research suggest that Bristol Myers Squibb's Orencia, Johnson & Johnson's Remicade, and Amgen's/Wyeth's Enbrel will forfeit share of the rheumatoid arthritis market to Roche's newly launched Actemra. Early switching data from Majestic’s proprietary panel of rheumatologists indicates that Orencia may be the biggest loser of all, as 54% of switches to Actemra thus far have been from Orencia.

Positive Phase 2 data from Nektar Therapeutics' NKTR-102 study in women with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer

Nektar Therapeutics today announced preliminary progression-free survival data from the first stage of a two-stage Phase 2 clinical study evaluating single-agent treatment with NKTR-102 in women with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer. In the first stage of the study, 39 patients were enrolled with platinum-resistant disease and were evaluable for the secondary endpoint of progression-free survival (PFS).

Chikungunya: Experimental vaccine successfully tested in monkeys
