Study evaluates economic cost of cancer across 27 countries of the EU

The first ever study to evaluate the economic cost of cancer across the 27 countries of the EU has found that the total cost of cancer in the EU in 2009 was €126 billion, with cancer in Germany, France, Italy, and the UK together accounting for just over two-thirds of this cost (€83 billion).

Results announced for Phase II PRECEDENT trial of vintafolide for treatment of platinum-resistant ovarian cancer

Merck, known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, (NYSE: MRK) and Endocyte, Inc. (NASDAQ: ECYT) today announced the online publication of results from the randomized Phase II PRECEDENT trial for vintafolide (MK-8109/EC145), an investigational folate small molecule drug conjugate (SMDC), in the Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO), the official journal of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

According to a new report published today by the International Osteoporosis Foundation, women may expect to live longer but their quality of life will be seriously jeopardized if action to protect their bone health is not taken. Postmenopausal women are the most vulnerable to osteoporosis and fractures. Worldwide, an estimated 200 million women are affected by osteoporosis and around one in three women aged over 50 will suffer from a fracture due to the disease.

A major study conducted at the Sahlgrenska Academy has now disproved theories of a viral cause for breast cancer and the brain tumour, glioblastoma. The Surgical Oncology Department of the University of New Mexico Cancer Center is growing even larger. Ashwani Rajput, MD, Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology in the Department of Surgery at the UNM School of Medicine, has recently recruited two new hires for the department. Bridget Fahy, MD, who specializes in colorectal and complex pelvic cancer, and Anna Voltura, MD, who specializes in breast cancer, are both excited about the opportunity to work in an NCI designated cancer center.
