KAI Pharmaceuticals enrolls patients in Phase 1b study of KAI-4169 for treatment of SHPT

KAI Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a privately held drug discovery and development company, today announced enrollment of the first patients in a Phase 1b study of KAI-4169, a novel pharmaceutical agent being tested for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism, which is a frequent and serious complication of end-stage renal disease.

European Society of Cardiology to support EuroPRevent Meeting

Workplace wellness programmes play a vital role in preventing cardiovascular disease and stroke. This year's World Heart Day theme is to encourage employers and employees to take simple steps to improve heart-health in the workplace. The European Society of Cardiology is keen to support this theme, which coincides with the upcoming launch of two major initiatives at the next EuroPRevent Meeting in April 2011 in Geneva.

Early recipient of transcatheter aortic valve receives Courageous Patient Award

Lillian Feldshuh, of Scarsdale, NY, an early recipient of a transcatheter aortic valve in 2006, received the Courageous Patient Award yesterday at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics scientific symposium in Washington, DC. The procedure was a success and Feldshuh, who will turn 100 years in just 7 months, remains in good health.

Researchers find no link between dialysis treatments and cardiac symptoms

Dialysis treatments do not affect the heart health of kidney disease patients who have had a heart attack, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Clinical Journal of the American Society Nephrology (CJASN). Since cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in kidney disease patients, the findings are good news for individuals who need the treatments.

Concerted effort yields significant progress in reducing depression, HIV/AIDS, and osteoporosis in women

A concerted effort to boost research on women's health over the last two decades has lessened the burden of disease and reduced deaths among women due to cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, and cervical cancer, says a new report from the Institute of Medicine. The effort has yielded less but still significant progress in reducing the effects of depression, HIV/AIDS, and osteoporosis on women, added the committee that wrote the report.

Despite the vast majority (91%) of workers believing that it is their employer's responsibility to create a healthy working environment, nearly a third (32%) of employees feels their workplace actually hinders their ability to lead a healthy lifestyle, according to new independent research commissioned by the World Heart Federation and conducted by Opinion Health.

Progress in realizing potential of satellite measurements of air pollution

In many developing countries, the absence of surface-based air pollution sensors makes it difficult, and in some cases impossible, to get even a rough estimate of the abundance of a subcategory of airborne particles that epidemiologists suspect contributes to millions of premature deaths each year. The problematic particles, called fine particulate matter (PM2.5), are 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter, about a tenth the fraction of human hair. These small particles can get past the body's normal defenses and penetrate deep into the lungs.
