Pacific Biomarkers, Inc. has been awarded a contract by a leading multinational pharmaceutical company to provide essential laboratory data for an adaptive Phase I cardiovascular trial. This study is part of a major drug-development program to evaluate an innovative new treatment to reduce recurrent cardiovascular events associated with acute coronary syndrome.

Important milestone in development of ORMD-0801 published in DOM journal

Oramed Pharmaceuticals Inc., a developer of alternative drug delivery systems, announced today that the paper entitled, "Open-label study to assess the safety and pharmacodynamics of five oral insulin formulations in healthy subjects," authored by Dr. Roy Eldor, Dr. Miriam Kidron and Dr. Ehud Arbit, was accepted and published in the Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism journal.

Hospital matters in complication rates and lengths of stay for bariatric surgery

The number of bariatric surgeries in the U.S. skyrocketed from 13,386 in 1998 to 220,000 in 2008, but a new study released today by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization, finds that the nation's hospitals have wide variances in both complication rates and lengths of stay, which largely correlate with the number of times the hospital performs bariatric procedures.

Study finds disagreement between RA patients and doctors on assessment of disease severity

A novel study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco found that nearly one-third of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients differed from their physicians in assessment of their disease severity. The disagreement between patient and doctor evaluation of RA activity was most prevalent in patients with depressive symptoms, and those who had poor overall function.

NIDDK awards Albert Einstein College of Medicine $9.5M for continuation of Diabetes Research and Training Center

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University a five-year, $9.5 million grant for the continuation of its Diabetes Research and Training Center (DRTC). The DRTC was also awarded a $632,000 supplemental grant for equipment and additional pilot and feasibility studies through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), bringing total NIH support to $10,177,000.

CMS approves Fresenius Medical Care Chronic Kidney Disease Data Registry

The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approved the Fresenius Medical Care Chronic Kidney Disease Data Registry, supported by its Acumen applications. As a participating registry in CMS's 2010 Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI), the approval of the nephrology-specific Acumen applications enables participating nephrologists to report quality outcomes directly to the PQRI program.

NASH-induced cirrhosis is greater risk factor for HCC: Cleveland Clinic study

A study conducted by researchers at the Cleveland Clinic finds that patients suffering from cirrhosis preceded by nonalcoholic steatohepatitis are at an equal risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma than those who develop cirrhosis resulting from hepatitis C virus. Results of this study appear in the June issue of Hepatology, a journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.
