Researchers lay foundation for future lung cancer detection test

Scientists working with Professor Dr. Joachim L. Schultze have identified over 480 molecules whose concentration in the blood changes when a person develops lung cancer. These molecules are present in the blood cells either in increased or decreased quantities. "In lung cancer patients, typical patterns which can be detected with a measuring program thus emerge", explains Prof. Schultze.

Pfizer Inc. announced today that its New Drug Application for crizotinib, an oral first-in-class anaplastic lymphoma kinase inhibitor, has been accepted for filing and granted Priority Review status by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and has been filed with the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

'Mu opioid' receptors in the brain linked to smoking relapse

Nearly everyone who has tried to quit smoking says it's incredibly difficult, and the struggle is due in part to genetic factors. Now, a new study from the Raymond and Ruth Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania sheds light on how one specific genetic risk for smoking relapse may work: Some of the difficulties may be due to how many receptors, called "mu opioid" receptors, a smoker has in his or her brain.
