Researchers discover genetic variant that raises risk of CHD

Although congenital heart disease represents the most common major birth defect, scientists have not previously identified the common variation in the genes that give rise to it. Now genetics and cardiology researchers, two of them brothers, have discovered a genetic variant on chromosome 5 that strongly raises the risk of congenital heart disease.

Traffic-related air pollution, known to raise the risk for cardiovascular disease, may also increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in women. Low-grade inflammation may contribute to the higher incidence of type 2 diabetes in women exposed to air pollution, according to German researchers.

Health Canada approves Victoza for treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes

Diabetes is growing at an alarming rate in Canada, with an estimated 3.7 million people expected to be diagnosed by 2020. It is a progressive disease that, if not properly monitored and managed over time, will lead to serious long term complications. Canadians now have a novel treatment available to help them maintain optimal blood glucose levels. Health Canada has approved Victoza (liraglutide), the first GLP-1 analogue, for once-daily administration for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes to improve glycemic control in combination with metformin or metformin and a sulfonylurea.

Cardiovascular Systems initiates enrollment in ORBIT II IDE clinical trial of Diamondback 360 System

Cardiovascular Systems, Inc., announces the first patient enrollment in its ORBIT II Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) clinical trial to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of its Diamondback 360® System in treating coronary arteries. The patient was treated by Dr. P.K. Khanna, an interventional cardiologist with Eisenhower Medical Center in Palm Springs, Calif. Dr. Khanna also treated patients in the 2008 ORBIT I coronary study of 50 patients in India.

Research findings offer possible applications in diagnosis and treatment of patients with atherosclerosis

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine have shown that use of magnetic resonance imaging in an animal model can non-invasively identify dangerous plaques. The findings, which appear in the May issue of Circulation Cardiovascular Imaging, offer possible applications in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with atherosclerosis.

St. Jude Medical, Inc., a global medical device company, announced today at EuroPCR it will evaluate the incremental cost-effectiveness of Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR)-guided treatment for patients with multivessel coronary artery disease in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium and Canada. When the arteries delivering oxygen to our vital organs are obstructed by atherosclerosis or clots, the result is almost always a stroke, heart attack or damage to a peripheral tissue such as the legs (peripheral artery disease).
