NIH awards $38.2M grant to Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science

In support of a critical partnership between Georgetown University Medical Center and Howard University, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded a $38.2 million Clinical and Translational Sciences Award to aid the universities' effort to transform health care and preventive practices in communities through medical discoveries made in laboratories and clinical settings.

GSK confirms FDA advisory committees' vote to allow Avandia to remain on the market

GlaxoSmithKline confirmed today that a joint advisory committee to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) voted to allow Avandia to remain on the market. Committee members voted for recommendations ranging from making no changes to the current label, to revising the label with additional warnings and restrictions to withdrawal from the U.S. market.

Study links obesity to poorer memory, brain function in older women

The more an older woman weighs, the worse her memory, according to new research from Northwestern Medicine. The effect is more pronounced in women who carry excess weight around their hips, known as pear shapes, than women who carry it around their waists, called apple shapes.

The University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers have been ranked among the country's best hospitals, placing 14th overall for the second consecutive year by U.S. News & World Report magazine. This year, U-M was ranked in every specialty and those rankings went up in 11 of the 16 specialties.

Sanofi-Aventis Deutschland GmbH and Novalar Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that the Marketing Authorization Application (MAA) for OraVerse has been accepted for review by the regulatory agencies of the United Kingdom (UK), Germany, Italy, France and Spain. OraVerse is the first and only local anesthesia reversal agent that accelerates the return of normal sensation and function following routine dental procedures. OraVerse is approved for use in the U.S. by the Food and Drug Administration and sold by Novalar direct to U.S. dentists.

Trevena completes $35M Series B financing

Trevena, Inc., the leader in discovery and development of G-protein coupled receptor biased ligands, announced today that it has completed a $35 million Series B financing. Research provides better understanding of drugs used to treat, prevent cardiovascular disease

Using chemical labeling and mass spectrometry-based techniques, Mark Chance, PhD, director of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine Center for Proteomics and Bioinformatics and professor of physiology and biophysics; Sayan Gupta, PhD, instructor at the Case Center for Proteomics and Bioinformatics; and a research team from the University of Oxford, for the first time, were able to take a high resolution picture of the open state of a K+ channel, allowing them to comparatively analyze gating mechanisms important to heart function and nerve signaling - in addition these techniques have already permitted Case Western investigators to gain a deeper understanding of G-protein coupled receptors.

BioInvent reports net revenues of SEK 63.1M for January - June 2010 period

BioInvent reached an important milestone when the results of a phase II trial of TB-402 following orthopaedic surgery, were reported in May. The data showed that TB-402 is statistically better at preventing thrombosis than enoxaparin, the current standard treatment. Supported by these good results, BioInvent and the company's partner, ThromboGenics, will now prioritise securing a development partner for the programme to ensure that the necessary resources is in place to take the product candidate to the market.

A report issued by Thomson Reuters and shared in part at the Aspen Ideas Festival on July 10th, indicates that a combination of better coordinated public and private sector care; stronger patient awareness of health risks and wellness; and application of improved information systems to eliminate fraud and abuse could lead to a 50% reduction in wasteful spending in healthcare, saving 3.6 trillion dollars over the next decade.

Study evaluates physicians' experiences related to colleagues who are impaired to practice medicine

A survey of physicians finds that while most support the professional commitment to report other physicians who they feel are incompetent or impaired, such as from alcohol or drug use, when faced with this situation, many did not follow through on making a report, according to a study in the July 14 issue of JAMA.

The National Cholesterol Education Program maintains guidelines to assess the accuracy of methods for measuring cholesterol levels in patients. A recent study published in the journal Clinical Chemistry found that seven leading commercial methods produce results of mixed accuracy when compared to well-established techniques.

IAS announces recipients of CNIHR grants

The International AIDS Society today announced the recipients of its first joint research grant programme, Creative and Novel Ideas in HIV Research. CNIHR grants, funded in partnership with the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the NIH-supported Centers for AIDS Research are designed to promote innovative research and new ideas from early stage investigators whose primary focus has previously been in fields of scientific inquiry other than HIV/ AIDS.

Exposure to cigarette smoke can alter gene expression, study finds

In the largest study of its kind, researchers at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research have found that exposure to cigarette smoke can alter gene expression -- the process by which a gene's information is converted into the structures and functions of a cell. These alterations in response to smoking appear to have a wide-ranging negative influence on the immune system, and a strong involvement in processes related to cancer, cell death and metabolism.
