For example, the authors write, "heart disease ranked first among the top-ten conditions in terms of attributable share of growth from 1987 to 1997, accounting for nearly 14 percent of the increase in Medicare spending."

Physio-Control restarts unrestricted global shipments of LIFEPAK defibrillators following FDA approval

Health groups call for cigarette manufacturers to pay for anti-smoking education campaigns and quit-smoking programs

Six public health groups today asked the U. S. Supreme Court to authorize a trial court to require major cigarette manufacturers to pay for a broad public education campaign against smoking, as well as programs to help smokers quit. The groups also asked that the trial court be empowered to require the tobacco companies to forfeit profits they made during decades of illegal activity.

"Violence against women is a global epidemic, threatening the lives and safety of women and girls around the world," Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D-Md.), chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, writes in a Baltimore Sun opinion piece in which he asserts his support of the International Violence Against Women Act. Amgen's Prolia Complete Response submission: FDA classifies and sets PDUFA date

Amgen Inc. today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has evaluated the content of the Company's Complete Response submission for Prolia™ (denosumab) in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis and classified it as a Class 2 resubmission. With the Class 2 designation, the FDA set a corresponding Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) action date of July 25, 2010.

Sepracor Inc. and Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd. (DSP) today announce the resignation of Adrian Adams as President and Chief Executive Officer and Director of Sepracor and as Executive Officer of DSP, effective immediately, and the appointment of Saburo Hamanaka as Chairman of Sepracor and Executive Officer of DSP.
