United Therapeutics Corporation announced today that it has withdrawn its Marketing Authorization Application (MAA) for Tyvaso (treprostinil sodium) 0.6 mg/ml nebuliser solution for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in the European Union.

Sepracor to merge with Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma America

Sepracor Inc. and Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd. (DSP) today announce the resignation of Adrian Adams as President and Chief Executive Officer and Director of Sepracor and as Executive Officer of DSP, effective immediately, and the appointment of Saburo Hamanaka as Chairman of Sepracor and Executive Officer of DSP. Sepracor and DSP also announce the planned merger of Sepracor and DSP’s subsidiary, Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma America, Inc. (DSPA), to be completed on April 1, 2010, with Sepracor as the surviving company.

A UCLA study reveals how human genes interact with their environment to boost disease risk. Published in the Feb. 18 online edition of the American Journal of Human Genetics, the findings shed light on why the search for specific gene variants linked to human diseases can only partly explain common disorders.

On January 29, 2010, Sacred Heart Medical Center was cited and fined $8,000 for failing to adhere to state and national H1N1 influenza safety standards. The Department of Labor and Industries Division of Occupational Safety and Health issued the citation and fine for violation of Center for Disease Control and Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines on H1N1 and also for violation of the DOSH Directive on Enforcement Procedures for High or Very High Occupational Exposure Risk to the 2009 H1N1 Influenza.

Untreated gum disease has potentially dangerous implications

The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) estimates that approximately three out of four Americans suffer from some form of gum disease -- from mild cases of gingivitis, to the more severe form known as periodontitis. However, despite this prevalence, approximately only three percent seek treatment for their gum disease. With increasingly more research indicating that gum disease may be linked to several other diseases, including diabetes, heart disease and certain forms of cancer, maintaining healthy teeth and gums has become more important that ever.

Blood transfusions based on single low hematocrit measurement questioned

A comparison study of nearly 1,900 patients published in Perfusion, a peer-reviewed academic journal, questions the long-standing practice of basing blood transfusion decisions on a single low hematocrit measurement result. In the study, titled Is it the Patient or the Physician who Cannot Tolerate Anemia?, researchers showed that a single measure of hematocrit is not a reliable indicator of transfusion need and that lower-than-normal hemoglobin levels have no adverse impact on patients.

Study finds nearly a quarter of prescriptions go unfilled

Many people whose doctors start them on medications for conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure may never fill those prescriptions, a new study suggests. Researchers found that among more than 75,000 Massachusetts patients given drug prescriptions over one year, 22 percent of the prescriptions were never filled.
