Nivolumab and pembrolizumab therapies continue to show promise against advanced melanomas

Results of two clinical trials reported at the American Society for Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting 2015 show continued promise of immune therapies nivolumab and pembrolizumab against advanced melanomas, specifically in the context of PD1 signaling that some tumors use to avoid immune system attack. Dr. Rene Gonzalez, MD, investigator at the University of Colorado Cancer Center and director of the Melanoma Research Clinics at the CU School of Health, is an author of both studies.

Talimogene laherparepvec treatment shows durable clinical responses in advanced-stage melanoma patients

Data from the pivotal coBRIM Phase III study, presented by Lead Investigator Dr James Larkin today at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting, demonstrate that Roche’s investigational MEK inhibitor cobimetinib, used in combination with BRAF inhibitor vemurafenib, typically offers people with previously untreated advanced metastatic melanoma (BRAFV600 mutation-positive unresectable or metastatic) one full year (median 12.3 months) without their disease worsening.

Combination of nivolumab and ipilimumab drugs can improve outcomes in patients with advanced melanoma

Treating advanced melanoma patients with either a combination of the immunotherapy drugs nivolumab (Opdivo™) and ipilimumab (Yervoy™) or nivolumab alone significantly increases progression-free survival (PFS) over using ipilimumab alone, according to new findings from researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) simultaneously presented today at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting and published online in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). Examining specific characteristics of each patient's tumor has also given researchers clearer understanding of which patients should receive the combination.
