FX006 demonstrates pain relief in Phase 2b osteoarthritis study, Flexion reports

Flexion Therapeutics, Inc., today reported that its lead compound FX006, a novel intra-articular, sustained release steroid, demonstrated pain relief that is of both greater magnitude and longer duration than the most commonly prescribed immediate release steroid, triamcinolone acetonide, in a Phase 2b dose-ranging trial in osteoarthritis.

Physician’s unfavorable attitudes about opioid drugs linked with lower rates of prescribing

According to a study of physicians' attitudes about pain drugs published in The Journal of Pain, negative physician attitudes about opioid medications are closely associated with lower rates of prescribing and more favorable attitudes are linked with higher prescribing levels.

Primary care physicians prefer to prescribe NSAIDS for chronic pain, report shows

For treating the estimated 100 million Americans with chronic pain -- a population larger than those with heart disease, cancer and diabetes combined -- researched reported in The Journal of Pain shows that primary care physicians overwhelmingly prefer to prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, in accordance with published clinical practice guidelines.

An estimated 22 veterans kill themselves in the U.S. each day. And suicide among men and women on active duty hit a record high last year -- 349. As veterans and researchers try to figure out why, there's growing interest in a condition known as "moral injury," or wounds to a veteran's spirit or soul from events that "transgress deeply held moral beliefs and expectations."

Linagliptin significantly reduces blood glucose levels in T2D patients with moderate to severe renal impairment

Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Eli Lilly and Company today announced results from a new study in which linagliptin demonstrated statistically significant reductions in blood glucose levels (HbA1c) after 12 weeks (the study's primary endpoint) in adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) with moderate to severe renal impairment, compared with placebo. Most patients had T2D for more than ten years (76 percent) and were on insulin (86 percent).

Astellas Pharma Europe Ltd., the European Headquarters of Tokyo-based Astellas Pharma Inc. (TSE:4503), and Medivation, Inc. announced that following the regulatory review process by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and a positive opinion from the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use on April 25, 2013, the European Commission (EC) has granted the marketing authorization for XTANDI™ (enzalutamide) capsules for the treatment of adult men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer whose disease has progressed on or after docetaxel therapy.

In today's disposable society, hearing is an endangered species. "Once hearing is damaged, it cannot be repaired," said Jyoti Bhayani, a certified audiologist at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, part of Loyola University Health System. "And hearing aids have yet to become coveted status accessories so young people need to wise up and turn the volume down on their earbuds."
