Thermal imaging camera monitors pain processing in patients suffering from small fiber neuropathy

Early results from the NeuroSIPE* programme 'Beyond Pain' project, in research funded by the Dutch Technology Foundation STW, demonstrate how a FLIR SC5600 thermal imaging camera has been used as an effective, non-invasive tool for monitoring of pain processing in the central nervous system of patients suffering from small fiber neuropathy.

Takeda, Seattle Genetics announce preliminary data from brentuximab vedotin phase I study on sALCL

Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited, and Seattle Genetics, Inc., today announced preliminary data from one arm of a three arm phase I, open-label, multicenter study designed to determine the safety and activity of sequential and combination treatment approaches of brentuximab vedotin with CHOP or CH-P chemotherapy in newly diagnosed patients with CD30-positive mature T- and NK- cell lymphomas.

New evidence-based guidelines for management of acute low back pain

According to an article in the October issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology, radiologists at Emory University Hospital, in Atlanta, and Georgia Health Sciences University, in Augusta, Ga., have developed evidence-based guidelines to assist physicians with the process of managing patients with acute low back pain.

Exelixis announces interim data from cabozantinib phase 2 trial on metastatic CRPC

Exelixis, Inc. today announced interim data from 51 patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) and bone metastases receiving a 40 mg daily dose of cabozantinib in an ongoing non-randomized expansion (NRE) cohort of a phase 2 randomized discontinuation trial.

People with SIRT1 genetic variation more likely to develop vibration-induced white finger disease

Vibration-induced white finger disease (VWF) is caused by continued use of vibrating hand held machinery (high frequency vibration >50 Hz), and affects tens of thousands of people. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Clinical Epigenetics finds that people with a genetic polymorphism (A2191G) in sirtuin1 (SIRT1), a protein involved in the regulation of endothelial NOS (eNOS), are more likely to suffer from vibration-induced white finger disease.

Nearly 20 percent of people who underwent low back fusion surgery developed post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms associated with that surgery, according to a recent Oregon Health & Science University study published in the journal Spine.

FDA approves Stiefel’s Sorilux Foam sNDA to treat for scalp psoriasis

Stiefel, a GSK company, today announced that the US Food and Drug Administration has approved a supplemental New Drug Application (sNDA) for Sorilux (calcipotriene) Foam, 0.005%. The sNDA expands the indication for Sorilux Foam to include the topical treatment of plaque psoriasis of the scalp in patients aged 18 years and older.

FDA approves Globus Medical’s SECURE-C Cervical Artificial Disc

Globus Medical, Inc., today announced that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Premarket Approval (PMA) for the SECURE-C Cervical Artificial Disc. Clinical data from a 380 patient investigational device exemption (IDE) study demonstrate that SECURE-C is statistically superior to anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) in terms of overall success, subsequent surgery at the index level, device-related adverse events, and patient satisfaction at 24 months.

Research roundup: Saving money with hospital observation units, total knee replacement rates skyrocketing, Medicare patients and antibiotic overuse

The authors write: Using observation units in hospitals to provide care to certain patients can be more efficient than admitting them to the hospital and can result in shorter lengths-of-stay and lower costs. However, such units are present in only about one-third of US hospitals.

The herpes zoster virus, which causes shingles, is becoming more common as the population ages. In Australia the number of cases has doubled between 2000 and 2010. Hospital emergency departments report a 2–6% increase in cases per year.

EC approves Janssen’s DACOGEN for treatment of de novo acute myeloid leukaemia

Janssen-Cilag International NV announced today that the European Commission has approved the marketing authorisation for DACOGEN(decitabine) for the treatment of adult patients (age 65 years and above) with newly diagnosed de novo or secondary acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) classification, who are not candidates for standard induction chemotherapy.
