Gleevec shows significant overall survival benefit for patients w/ GIST after 3 years of adjuvant treatment vs. 1 year

Novartis announced new data today showing a significant improvement in both recurrence-free survival and overall survival for patients taking Gleevec® (imatinib mesylate)* tablets for three years after surgery to remove KIT (CD117)-positive gastrointestinal stromal tumors (KIT+ GIST) compared to one year of treatment. These data will be presented at the 47th American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) plenary session on Sunday, June 5.

Unlike current treatments this peptide does not exhibit deleterious side effects such as reduced motor coordination, memory loss, or depression, according to an article in Nature Medicine posted online June 5, 2011.

Promising results from Exelixis' cabozantinib phase 2 trial against metastatic ovarian cancer

Exelixis, Inc. reported longer follow-up data from a fully enrolled cohort of patients with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer, primary peritoneal carcinoma, or fallopian tube carcinoma treated with cabozantinib (XL184) in an ongoing phase 2 adaptive randomized discontinuation trial. Cabozantinib shows promising activity in these patients independent of prior response to platinum-based therapies.

Positive results from Plexxikon's vemurafenib Phase 2 and 3 trial against metastatic melanoma

Plexxikon Inc., a member of the Daiichi Sankyo Group, today announced efficacy and safety data from the BRIM3 trial, a large, randomized, multi-center Phase 3 clinical study of vemurafenib in patients with previously untreated metastatic melanoma with the BRAFV600 mutation.

Screening unhelpful in lowering deaths from ovarian cancer

New research shows that women regularly screened for ovarian cancer are just as likely to die from the disease. This comes as no surprise as there are still no adequate detection methods, says Ovarian Cancer Australia. Of the 1,200 Australian women diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year, 800 die, often because it is diagnosed too late to be treated.

Gabapentin medication induces anorgasmia in older and elderly patients

Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) researchers have found that Gabapentin, a medication commonly used to treat neuropathic pain, seizures and biopolar disease in older and elderly patients, seems to have a higher incidence of anorgasmia, or failure to experience orgasm, than previously reported. This study appears in the current issue of the American Journal of Geriatric Pharmacotherapy.
