Artificial discs a viable alternative to fusion surgery for two-level lumbar degenerative disc disease

When two adjacent discs in the low back wear out, become compressed and cause unmanageable pain, numbness or other symptoms, replacement with artificial discs can be a viable alternative to standard fusion surgery, based on two-year post-surgery data from a randomized, multicenter trial recently published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Pediatric pain experts discuss safety, efficacy of pain medications in children

Can we be certain that pain medications considered safe for adults, based on extensive clinical data and experience, are equally safe for use in young children? Pediatric pain experts discussed this question today in a panel session at the American Pain Society, www.ampainsoc.org, annual scientific meeting and agreed more short term and long-term clinical data are needed to provide assurances about the safety and efficacy of several pain medications in children.

FDA approves Sutent for patients with progressive neuroendocrine cancerous tumors in pancreas

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Sutent (sunitinib) to treat patients with progressive neuroendocrine cancerous tumors located in the pancreas that cannot be removed by surgery or that have spread to other parts of the body (metastatic).

EMA CHMP recommends positive opinion for marketing authorization of Amgen's XGEVA

Amgen today announced that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use of the European Medicines Agency has recommended a positive opinion for the marketing authorization of XGEVA (denosumab) for the prevention of skeletal-related events (pathological fracture, radiation to bone, spinal cord compression or surgery to bone) in adults with bone metastases from solid tumors.

Panel votes 20-0 for reformed labeling of kids’ pain & fever relieving medication

A federal advisory panel unanimously recommended that dosing for children's acetaminophen be based primarily on the child's weight rather than age. At present the dosing for children's products including acetaminophen- best known by the brand name Tylenol- is based on age, although many labels also contain information on dosing by weight as well. Acetaminophen is the most commonly used medicine meant to lower fever and relieve pain in children.
