Kathleen Keef, Ph.D., professor of physiology and cell biology at the University of Nevada School of Medicine, has been awarded a four-year, $1.2 million grant from the National Institute of Health to study the control of motility in the internal anal sphincter.

ZIOP Chief Medical Officer receives grant to develop novel treatment for pediatric sarcoma

The Kristen Ann Carr Fund has awarded a grant to Jonathan Lewis, MD, PhD, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer of ZIOPHARM Oncology, Inc., which will fund translational work at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, for the development of a novel treatment for pediatric sarcoma.

Effects of UV radiation may increase chance of developing eye problems later in life

While 85 percent of Americans recognize that ultraviolet rays can damage their eyes, only 65 percent wear sunglasses as protection, and even fewer (39 percent) make sure their children wear sunglasses. By comparison, 78 percent make sure their children wear sunscreen when outdoors.

A multi-center study led by a researcher at Rhode Island Hospital has determined that long-term elder care, HIV-infected and hemodialysis patients are at increased risk of carrying methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in their nose.

FDA approves Lupin Pharmaceuticals' Imipramine Pamoate capsules

Lupin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (LPI) announced today that it has received final approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Imipramine Pamoate capsules, 75 mg, 100 mg, 125 mg and 150 mg strengths. Commercial shipments of the product have already commenced.

Guardian accreditation confirms that quality out-of-home care costs

Barnardos Australia today becomes the first child welfare agency to be re-accredited under NSW standards as an agency designated to arrange out-of-home care for children and young people. Barnardo's is also the first agency to pilot the new accreditation system, administered by the Children's Guardian, which groups 22 child focused standards into four quality areas.

Prevalence of scalp fungus infection among children living in metropolitan areas

Approximately 7 percent of elementary school children across the bi-state, Kansas City metropolitan area are infected with the fungus Trichophyton tonsurans (T. tonsurans), the leading cause of ringworm in the U.S., according to a new study published today in Pediatrics. This is the largest study to date aimed at defining infection prevalence of the scalp fungus in children living in a metropolitan area and has implications for children nationwide.

A tobacco company's new, dissolvable nicotine pellet--which is being sold as a tobacco product, but which in some cases resembles popular candies--could lead to accidental nicotine poisoning in children, according to a new study from the Harvard School of Public Health, the Northern Ohio Poison Control Center, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration.
