Tubal ligation and breastfeeding may lower risk of ovarian cancer in women with BRCA gene mutations

Breastfeeding, tubal ligation - also known as having one's "tubes tied" - and oral contraceptives may lower the risk of ovarian cancer for some women with BRCA gene mutations, according to a comprehensive analysis from a team at the University of Pennsylvania's Basser Research Center for BRCA and the Abramson Cancer Center.

Using new stem cell technology, scientists at the Salk Institute have shown that neurons generated from the skin cells of people with schizophrenia behave strangely in early developmental stages, providing a hint as to ways to detect and potentially treat the disease early.

A new study by researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston is the first to show that premature aging of the placenta due to oxidative stress is the cause of many preterm births. The study appears today in the American Journal of Pathology.

Study: Katrina and Rita hurricanes may be responsible for stillbirths in worst hit areas

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita may be responsible for up to half of the stillbirths in the areas hardest hit by the storms, according to a new study co-authored by Ian Breunig, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Pharmaceutical Health Services Research (PHSR) and the Center for Innovative Pharmacy Solutions in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science (PPS) at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy.
