Anglican Church’s take on population growth: Stop baby bonus

An Anglican Church body has urged authorities to scrap the baby bonus to control population growth. The church's key advisory group wants the Gillard Government to scrap public incentives that increase the birth rate and to cut immigration. It has described population growth as a taboo subject and the “elephant in the room”.

Maternal consumption of omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy reduces risk of childhood obesity

New research shows a possible connection between the risk of childhood obesity and maternal consumption of omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy. Intake of the omega-3s found in seafood is also linked to reduced risk of recurrent breast cancer, stroke in women and early age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Columbia requests FDA Priority Review for PROCHIEVE progesterone gel NDA

Columbia Laboratories, Inc., and Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc., today announced that Columbia has submitted a New Drug Application (NDA) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for PROCHIEVE® (progesterone gel) for the reduction of risk of preterm birth in women with short uterine cervical length in the mid-trimester of pregnancy.

Newer birth control pill raises risk of blood clots

Two human trials in the US and the UK including women from both populations showed that women taking newer forms of oral contraceptives, which include drosperinone, a synthetic version of the hormone progesterone, increased their risk of developing a blood clots by two or three times over those taking older birth control pills that rely on a different form of the hormone known as levonorgestrel.

Millennium submits two VELCADE sNDAs to FDA

Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company with its parent company Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited today announced that it has submitted two supplemental new drug applications (sNDAs) for VELCADE® (bortezomib) for Injection to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The first application seeks to add a subcutaneous route of administration for VELCADE. The second application is for the use of VELCADE in combination with rituximab in patients with relapsed follicular non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL).

Rwanda, QIAGEN and Merck launch comprehensive national cervical cancer prevention program

The Government of Rwanda, together with QIAGEN N.V. and Merck, known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, today announced the launch, in Kigali, Rwanda, of a comprehensive national cervical cancer prevention program that includes vaccination with GARDASIL [Human Papillomavirus Quadrivalent (Types 6, 11, 16 and 18) Vaccine, Recombinant] for appropriate girls 12 to 15 years of age and modern molecular diagnostic screening for women between the ages of 35 and 45.

Two new drug safety studies conducted by researchers at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) provide strong evidence that women taking oral contraception with drospirenone have an increased risk of nonfatal venous thromboembolism, or blood clots, compared to women taking oral contraception with levonorgestrel.
