University of Perugia researcher to lead BioNanoFilter European clinical trial on Group B Strep

NanoLogix, a biotechnology innovator in the rapid detection and identification of live-cell bacteria and microorganisms, announced today its BioNanoFilter (BNF) technology will undergo a clinical trial, led by Dr. Gian Carlo Di Renzo of the University of Perugia in Italy.

United Therapeutics Corporation announced today the completion of its FREEDOM-M Phase 3 trial of treprostinil diethanolamine, an investigational sustained release oral formulation of treprostinil, a stable synthetic form of prostacyclin, in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).

Altor receives NHLBI SBIR grant to complete ALT-836 second Phase 2 trial in ALI/ARDS

Altor BioScience Corporation announced today that the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute has awarded Altor a Small Business Innovation Research Phase II Competing Renewal Grant. The award of over $3.18 MM over three years will support Altor's efforts to complete a second Phase 2 clinical trial using ALT-836, an antibody-based tissue factor antagonist, as a therapy to treat patients with infection-induced acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Journal of Rheumatology publishes positive results from Cimzia Phase III trial in RA

UCB announced today results from a post hoc analysis of the RAPID 1 study published in the Journal of Rheumatology. The results suggest moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis patients treated with Cimzia, the only approved PEGylated anti-TNF, together with methotrexate, achieved a rapid response associated with improved long-term outcomes one year after treatment began.

Peripheral venous catheters cause over 10% of catheter-related bloodstream infections

A new study from Rhode Island Hospital has found that more than one in 10 catheter-related bloodstream infections due to Staph aureus in hospitalized adults are caused by infected peripheral venous catheters (PVC). The study points out the substantial medical burden that arises from complications from these infections due to the large number of such catheters used in hospitalized patients.
