JMC Professor wins Karl Storz Lifetime Achievement Award in Endourology

Demetrius H. Bagley, M.D., the Nathan Lewis Hatfield Professor of Urology in the Department of Urology at Jefferson Medical College (JMC) of Thomas Jefferson University was recently honored as the 2010 recipient of the Karl Storz Lifetime Achievement Award in Endourology at the World Congress of Endourology. Scientists discover MSMB protein in urine can predict prostate cancer risk

British scientists have identified a protein in urine that can help indicate which patients are at an increased risk of developing prostate cancer. The Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute and The Institute of Cancer Research found that the level of MSMB protein in urine could provide a fast and accurate prostate cancer diagnosis for doctors and patients, potentially replacing the currently painful and more costly approach a blood sample.

New type of radiation reduces GI side effects but does not improve survival rate in prostate cancer patients

A new British review of existing research suggests that while a newer type of radiation for the treatment of prostate cancer does not help patients live longer compared to an older type at least when similar doses are given it does appear to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.

IMRT reduces gastrointestinal complications in prostate cancer patients

Prostate cancer patients who receive intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) are less apt to suffer serious gastrointestinal complications following their treatment than those who receive three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (CRT), according to new research from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

IMRT minimizes gastrointestinal side effects of prostate cancer treatment

Combination of chemotherapy and radiation improves control of cancer within bladder

Adding chemotherapy to radiation therapy for muscle invasive bladder cancer allows 67 percent of people to be free of disease in their bladders two years after treatment. This compares to 54 percent of people who receive radiation alone, according to the largest randomized study of its kind presented at the plenary session, November 1, 2010, at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).

Repros commences randomization in Androxal Phase II study in T2DM men with low testosterone

Repros Therapeutics Inc. today announced it has commenced randomization of subjects into its Phase II Androxal® study in the treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in men with low testosterone. Study evaluates protective effect of airbags on kidneys, upper urinary tract

Occupants in motor vehicles with airbags are much less likely to suffer kidney or renal damage in a crash than are occupants in vehicles without airbags, according to a new study in the September Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
