The presence of certain markers in the urine might be a red flag for acute kidney injury (AKI), according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society Nephrology (JASN). The results suggest that a simple urine test could help prevent cases of kidney failure.

Elderly often have poor outcomes from surgery: Study

A new study has shown the ill effects of surgery in the elderly. Results of the Australian study shows that one in five older patients will suffer complications from surgery and one in 20 will die within 30 days. Lead author and Associate Professor David Story from the University of Sydney and his team looked at more than 4,100 patients aged over 70 for the study.

A monoclonal antibody targeting a well known cell surface protein inhibited prostate cancer growth and metastasis in an aggressive form of the disease that did not respond to hormone therapy, according to a study by researchers with the UCLA Department of Urology and UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Watson third quarter net revenue increases 33% to $882.4 million

Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today reported net revenue grew 33 percent for the third quarter ended September 30, 2010 to $882.4 million, compared to $662.1 million in the third quarter 2009. On an adjusted cash basis, net income increased 18 percent to $105.9 million or $0.85 per share, compared to $90.0 million or $0.78 per share in the third quarter 2009.

Nymox awarded federal grant for NX-1207 Phase III BPH clinical trial program

Nymox Pharmaceutical Corporation announced today that it has been awarded a grant of $244,479.25 from the U.S Government under the Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project for its ongoing Phase III clinical trial program for NX-1207 for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The grant was the maximum allowable for an individual development program.

When Medicare policy changes led to reductions in reimbursement for hormonal treatment of prostate cancer, there was a sharp decline in its use among patients not likely to benefit from the treatment. But among patients for whom the therapy is clearly beneficial, doctors continued to prescribe it at the same rate, according to a new study.

According to the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), compared to men in 1999, American men in 2006 that were fighting prostate cancer were 45% less likely to die from the disease.

Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that its subsidiary, Watson Laboratories, Inc., has entered into an exclusive agreement with Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (OMJPI), to market the authorized generic version of Concerta® (methylphenidate hydrochloride extended-release tablets). Watson will launch its authorized generic of Concerta on May 1, 2011.
