Doctors want 'cured' HIV victim to have more tests

Doctors in the UK are urging a man to come forward for more tests after he apparently shook off the HIV virus.

It seems 25 year old Andrew Stimpson, was diagnosed as being HIV-positive in August 2002, but further blood tests 14 months later gave him the all-clear.

Apparently Mr Stimpson, from Largs in Ayrshire, told the media he felt special and blessed to have been "cured" and wonders if he holds the cure for AIDS.

But Mr Stimpson has so far declined to undergo further tests with the Chelsea and Westminster Healthcare NHS Trust, who carried out the initial tests.

A hospital spokeswoman has confirmed that Mr Stimpson has had a positive and a negative test, but is unable to confirm that he is free of the virus and has been cured.

The spokeswoman says they are urging him, for the sake of himself and the HIV community, to come in to be re-tested.

It seems Mr Stimpson had subsequently tried to sue the hospital, believing his initial positive test was inaccurate, but was told there was no case to answer as both tests were correct, she said.
