Indigo Orb, Inc. has announced that their Episure AutoDetect has received a 2007 Medical Design Excellence Award.

The Episure AutoDetect is a spring-loaded, automatic loss of resistance (LOR) syringe used in epidural anesthesia.

The Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA) competition is the only awards program that exclusively recognizes the contributions and advances in the design of medical products. Entries are evaluated on the basis of their design and engineering features, including innovative use of materials, user-related functions that improve healthcare delivery and change traditional medical attitudes or practices features that provide enhanced benefits to the patient, and the ability of the product development team to overcome design and engineering challenges so that the product meets its clinical objectives.

"We are honored to be recognized by the MDEA judges," said Bobby Shah, VP of Sales and Marketing for Indigo Orb, Inc. The benefits of Episure AutoDetect are being further evaluated by multi-center clinical trials.

A recent study by Ashraf S. Habib, MBBCh, MSc, FRCA, at Duke University found that Episure AutoDetect reliably and quickly identified the epidural space in laboring patients. The abstract of the study findings will be presented at the May 2007 SOAP Conference.

Another study conducted by Vitaly Soskin, M.D., at Wayne State University demonstrated that Episure AutoDetect helps in identifying the epidural space more accurately and objectively while providing better stability and controlled movement. The abstract of the study findings will also be presented at the May 2007 SOAP Conference.

Additional clinical studies are currently being conducted at Brigham & Women's Hospital and again at Stanford University. A full manuscript of the Stanford study is expected to be published in a peer review journal by 4th Quarter of this year.

The 2007 Medical Design Excellence Award winners will be honored at the ceremony during the Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East Conference and Exposition, June 12-14, 2007, at New York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Gold and silver recipients will be announced at this time.
