Cinergy Health, a nationwide provider of guaranteed issue health insurance benefit programs, has created a guide for consumers concerned about the H1N1 virus, which has already killed more than 4,000 Americans.

"Swine Flu is the number one consumer health concern this year and many people don't know where to turn for help," said Daniel Touizer, CEO of Cinergy Health. "Cinergy Health created this guide so Americans know how to protect themselves against this pandemic."

Cinergy Health medical director Dr. Margaret Lewin has created her top tips for preventing and treating H1N1:

  1. Get the H1N1 vaccine and the seasonal flu vaccine as soon as it is available in your community. They are safe and can be given at the same time and are important in preventing the spread of the flu.
  2. Keep your hands off your face and wash your hands frequently (with soap and water or hand sanitizer containing at least 60 percent ethyl alcohol). It is especially important to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds before you eat.
  3. If you begin to feel flu-like symptoms call your doctor immediately and stay home from work or school.
  4. Coughing into a tissue or the crook of your arm will help prevent the spread of the flu.
  5. Do not go back to school or work until you have been fever-free for at least 24 hours. You are the most contagious when you have a fever.
