BioTrends Research Group, Inc. published a syndicated research report, "TreatmentTrends®: Anemia in the United States," based on primary research conducted with approximately 400 physicians in clinical practice. The report evaluates patient types, referral patterns and treatment approaches as reported by Hematologists, Oncologists, Nephrologists, Gastroenterologists, OB-GYNs, Rheumatologists, Cardiologists and Primary Care Physicians.

The independent study was conducted to better understand the array of different types (and underlying causes) of anemia and how they vary among different specialists. The report examines which patient types are most commonly seen by each specialist, which specialists are likely to treat the anemia themselves (as opposed to referring out), what factors influence the decision to treat the anemia, the prevalence of iron treatment, ESA treatment and use of blood transfusions. The use and frequency of laboratory parameters as assessment tools is also compared across the specialties providing insight on the approach to diagnosis and treatment.
