Lakeshore General Hospital, a West Island HSSC facility, is restricting patient visits in the 4-West medical unit as a result of a bacterial outbreak. Other services provided by this hospital centre will not be affected. This preventive measure will remain in place until January 5.
Seven patients de in the 4-West wing have been identified as carriers of antibiotic-resistant bacteria known as vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE). Although none of these individuals has been infected by the bacteria, HSSC administration has decided to close the wing to new patients and to restrict visits in order to lower the risk of spreading infection. Approximately 30 patients are housed in the 4-West wing.
Among measures implemented are the disinfection of all surfaces in the affected area (including walls and beds) and a requirement that all medical staff wear protective clothing and gloves.
We suggest that anyone wishing to visit a close relative or friend in this ward postpone their visit. If this is not possible, visitors will have to comply with strict hygiene rules, including hand washing and wearing protective clothing and gloves. Only one visitor at a time will be allowed per patient.
Enterococcus-type bacteria are usually found in human beings' intestines and the genital area. They generally do not lead to infection in healthy individuals; however, people with a weakened immune system could develop an infection (urinary, at the site of an injury, etc.).
