Passage of comprehensive health care reform legislation: AMCP praises Congress

The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy congratulates Congress for passing historic, comprehensive health care reform legislation. The Academy is pleased that the final product will reflect a commitment to making quality health care available to millions of currently uninsured Americans. AMCP has long advocated for reforms that ensure safe, high quality, accessible and affordable health care services for all Americans.

“The Academy is particularly pleased at the recognition in the legislation of the role that pharmacists can and must play in managing prescriptions drug therapy and in ensuring improved outcomes for patients while avoiding intensive, costly health care services, such as surgery and hospitalization”

“The Academy is particularly pleased at the recognition in the legislation of the role that pharmacists can and must play in managing prescriptions drug therapy and in ensuring improved outcomes for patients while avoiding intensive, costly health care services, such as surgery and hospitalization,” says Judith Cahill, Executive Director of the Academy.

Among the pharmacy-specific provisions, the Academy applauds the creation of a public-private infrastructure to support research on comparative clinical and cost effectiveness research, the creation of a regulatory pathway for expedited approval of follow-on biologics, and the establishment of two types of federal grants that would promote medication therapy management (MTM) services.
