Ryan Medicare revamp continues to be political flashpoint

A congressionial Democrat holds a town hall meeting on the budget plan by Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., which includes significant changes to the Medicare program. Republicans see the budget blueprint as a litmus test.

U.S. Rep. Andre Carson will hear from seniors on whether Medicare should be immune from federal budget cuts. The Indianapolis Democrat plans to hold the town hall meeting in Indianapolis Wednesday morning. The national budget plan being pushed by U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan and other Republicans calls for major changes to the popular national healthcare system (6/8).

Rep. Paul Ryan's budget has become a litmus test for any Republican considering a White House run, but now even non-candidates like Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels are weighing in on the budget chairman's proposed plan…Daniels, who also served as a budget director during the Bush administration, is more sanguine on how voting for such a major change in Medicare will affect his party. He told Borger, "The cheap shots on Medicare were going to happen and we have to have that debate" (Livingston, 6/7).
