PBS NewsHour on Monday profiled five projects to improve maternal and child health that are competing for a share of $14 million in research grants through the Saving Lives at Birth challenge.

The research profiled includes chewing gum to prevent gum disease among pregnant women, an innovative storage device for antiretroviral drugs administered to an infant to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission, a mobile heart-monitoring unit, an alternative to forceps used in delivery, and stamp-sized diagnostics (Miller, 8/1).
