Nursing homes struggle to bounce back from Medicare cuts

Trimming expenses is just one way nursing home companies hope to stage a comeback.

Nursing-home companies Sun Healthcare Group Inc. and Skilled Healthcare Group Inc. said Tuesday they are aiming to cut expenses to help offset the impact of a severe Medicare reimbursement cut coming in two months (Kamp, 8/3).

MarketWatch: Nursing Facilities Struggle To Stage Recovery
Amid a broad market sell-off shares of nursing-home operators, hospitals and insurers tried to stage a recovery Tuesday, a day after Medicare cuts took a huge bite out of their earnings, but the companies met with mixed results. Depending on the news of the day, some managed to grab back some of the losses incurred while others continued to struggle. Skilled Healthcare Group Inc. jumped more than 10 percent to $5.58 after the company said it will not put itself up for sale. The company called off a review of its options after Monday's 43 percent loss (Britt, 8/2).
