The 3rd European Multidisciplinary Meeting on Urological Cancers will kick off this Friday, bringing together representatives of three adjacent fields involved in the management of prostate, bladder, kidney, testicular and penile cancer.

The meeting is jointly organised by three societies: the European Association of Urology (EAU), the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) and the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO).

One of the most important issues on the agenda addresses the implementation of the multidisciplinary approach in cancer treatment.

"Today, the multidisciplinary approach is no longer experimental, and indeed we are moving fast towards a more holistic approach to disease management," said Prof. P.-A. Abrahamsson, EAU Secretary General and member of the EMUC Organising Steering Committee. "At the same time we are still to reach a consensus on how the relative roles of urologists, medical oncologists and radiation therapists are distributed within this cooperation."

The scientific programme of the meetings aims to cover new developments in the field, placing a strong emphasis on the implications as seen from the perspective of the represented specialist groups. This multidimensional approach is also encouraged in each of the six debates which will take place during the meeting.

Some of the key speakers presenting at the meetings are: Prof. A. Heidenreich (Aachen, Germany), Prof. A. Horwich (Sutton, UK), Prof. W. Artibani (Verona, Italy), Prof. N. Clarke (Manchester, UK), Prof. P. Hoskin (Northwood, UK), and Prof. J. Barentsz (Nijmegen, The Netherlands).
