Globalpost examines implications of U.S. budget negotiations on global health spending

In the first article in a special report titled "The Seven Million," which looks at "the many challenges faced worldwide in an effort to reduce child mortality" and is "supported through a partnership with the Kaiser Family Foundation," GlobalPost examines the implications of U.S. budget negotiations on global health spending. "A review of ... correspondence to Congress obtained by GlobalPost provides insight into the behind-the-scenes battles that will determine how the United States will continue to support global health," the news service writes and describes some of the letters from members of Congress and non-governmental groups. GlobalPost also examines the "controversial budget fight" over reforming the U.S. food aid program, as well as funding for "less glamorous diseases," such diarrhea (Loewenberg/Miley, 4/24). GlobalPost's "Global Pulse" blog on Wednesday highlighted congressional testimony from USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah, noting, "Shah [on Wednesday] appeared before the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations to address the agency's priorities in the 2014 fiscal year" (Miley, 4/24).
