Sir Andrew Cash named second most exceptional NHS chief executive by Health Service Journal

SIR Andrew Cash, chief executive of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, has been named the second most exceptional NHS chief executive in the country by a leading health journal.

The annual list of the exceptional chief executives list, which was unveiled by the Health Service Journal and ranked by a panel of expert judges from across the healthcare sector, praised Sir Andrew for his passion for safe, high quality care; clear vision and direction; stability of leadership; and ability to influence the national scene and inspire personal loyalty in colleagues.

As well as looking at the financial and care quality performance of each chief executive’s organisation, judges considered the impact of the individual’s leadership, communication, patient focus, engagement and mentorship.

Sir Andrew Cash has led Sheffield Teaching Hospitals since 2001. The Trust was one of the first foundation trusts and employs 16,000 staff and has an annual budget of just under £1 billion. It was also one of the first NHS Trusts in the country to integrate hospital and community care, and now provides integrated care for more than two million patients a year both in the hospital and in the community. The Trust has been independently recognised as Trust of the Year three times in the last six years and has recently scooped a number of top health accolades for quality of care, safety and innovation.

As one of the longest serving chief executives in the NHS, Andrew has worked at local, regional and national level, including by invite at the Department of Health in Whitehall on a number of occasions. He is a visiting professor in leadership development at the Universities of York and Sheffield.

Andrew is also chair of the influential Shelford Group, a group of ten leading NHS multi-specialty academic healthcare organisations which benchmark and share best practice in key service areas, Deputy Chair of the NHS Confederation and Chairs the NHS Employers Policy Board.

Commenting on his leadership, nominators described Sir Andrew as “an exceptional leader who provides a clear vision for his trust and for the wider healthcare system.”
