Today elected officials and community representatives joined staff from the Mount Sinai Selikoff Centers for Occupational Health to formally open a new clinical center in Monroe, New York. As members of the New York State Department of Health's Occupational Health Clinic Network, the Selikoff Centers are the designated providers for the Lower Hudson Valley and New York City workforces, and leaders in the prevention and treatment of work-related injuries and illnesses.

"We welcome the opportunity to care for workers in Monroe, Orange County, and other communities throughout the lower Hudson Valley," said Madelynn Azar-Cavanagh, MD, Medical Director for the Selikoff Centers for Occupational Health. "While our focus is on prevention, we are here to provide excellent, patient-centered care when a work-related injury or illness does happen."

Each year, thousands of New Yorkers are injured at work or suffer from a work-related health condition. While musculoskeletal conditions caused by trauma or repetitive motion are common, work-related health conditions can also be life-threatening.

The physicians and health specialists at the Mount Sinai Selikoff Centers for Occupational Health are experts in diagnosing and treating occupational injuries and diseases and evaluating the physical, chemical, biological, and social environments of the workplace and their effects on health. The multidisciplinary team also works with employers to assess and reduce risk factors and establish comprehensive health and safety programs. Industrial hygiene assessments, ergonomic and injury prevention programs, and DOT medical examinations are available. In addition to the new location in Monroe, the Selikoff Centers have offices in Manhattan, Staten Island, and Yonkers, and have more than 15,000 clinical visits annually.

"Unfortunately, there are cases of individuals suffering from conditions caused by exposures in the workplace, such as occupational lung cancers," said Winston Kwa, MD, Medical Director for the Lower Hudson Valley Region of the Selikoff Centers for Occupational Health. "Without proper diagnosis and management of work-related conditions, individuals lose access to many benefits and resources to which they would otherwise receive."

Dr. Kwa, who serves as the treating physician at the new location as well as at the Selikoff Centers location in Yonkers, Westchester County, added "We are committed to helping people get back to work, so they can focus on their jobs and families," added Dr. Kwa. "Our social workers and benefits specialists help navigate the truly daunting workers' compensation system and connect individuals to the right resources."

"Our expertise in occupational medicine is unparalleled, and now these communities in the lower Hudson Valley will have access to integrated resources and expertise from throughout the Mount Sinai Health System," said Roberto Lucchini, MD, Director of the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

The Selikoff Centers for Occupational Health Lower Hudson Valley operations are guided by a regional advisory board composed of community, labor, and business leaders and occupational safety and health experts.

"I know I speak for many of my colleagues who welcome the opening of the clinical center," said John Gentile, Chair of the Lower Hudson Valley Advisory Board to the Selikoff Centers for Occupational Health. "With the expansion of these critical occupational health services from Yonkers to now Monroe, Mount Sinai is filling a much needed gap in the region."

"We look forward to continue working with state, regional, and local public agencies, businesses, and unions to find the best solutions to support the health of the region's workforce," said Dr. Lucchini. "We are committed to developing programs that reduce or prevent worker injury and illness and strengthen communities. "
