New data on Resverlogix RVX-208 for CKD treatment presented at ERA-EDTA Congress

Resverlogix Corp. today announced that new data on RVX-208 was presented at the ERA-EDTA Congress in London, England in a poster entitled: "Effects of RVX-208, a First-in-Class Epigenetic BET-Inhibitor, on Key Renal Parameters in Subjects with a History of CVD, and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD); a Post-hoc Analysis of Patients from the ASSERT, SUSTAIN and ASSURE Clinical Trials."

Combination of Mekinist and Tafinlar drugs improves outcome in patients with metastatic melanoma

Novartis today announced data from the Phase III COMBI-d study showing a significant survival benefit for patients with BRAF V600E/K mutation-positive metastatic melanoma when treated with the combination of Tafinlar (dabrafenib) and Mekinist (trametinib) compared to Tafinlar monotherapy alone.

Premature mortality target highly unethical and explicitly ageist

One of the main health targets proposed by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) is to reduce by one-third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases such as cancer, stroke and dementia. New UAB research shows that HBP medications can increase stroke risk

Untreated high blood pressure, or hypertension, wreaks havoc on the body, leading to heart disease and stroke. New research from the University of Alabama at Birmingham published in the journal Stroke shows that, although HBP medications are beneficial, it is as risky to wait for the condition to develop and then treat it to a controlled level.

MedUni Vienna expert suggests pricing strategy to reduce smoking

30% of the estimated 2.3 million smokers in Austria are considered to be heavily tobacco-dependent and, according to experts at MedUni Vienna, require professional treatment. This would mean around 690,000 people. According to Michael Kunze, an expert on smoking at the Center for Public Health at MedUni Vienna, an effective strategy would be to increase the price of tobacco products: "If the price of cigarettes were to rise just one percent above the inflation rate, that would bring about a 0.5% reduction in consumption worldwide."

Depression increases risk of mortality in patients with heart failure

Moderate to severe depression is associated with a 5-fold increased risk of all cause mortality in patients with heart failure, according to research presented today at Heart Failure 2015. The results from OPERA-HF show that risk was independent of comorbidities and severity of heart failure. Patients who were not depressed had an 80% lower mortality risk.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is associated with increased risk of dying from a cardiovascular disease such as heart failure or a heart attack, as well as diseases not associated with the heart.
