State roundup: Genetic testing on campus, Texas docs in Mass., and more

"A plan by the University of California, Berkeley to voluntarily test the DNA of incoming freshman has come under fire from critics who said the school was pushing an unproven technology on impressionable students. The university has said it will send test kits to 5,500 new students to analyze genes that help control the body's responses to alcohol, dairy products and folic acid" (Wohlsen, 5/21).

SLU Hospital announces increase in number of minimally-invasive spinal procedures performed

With the recent launch of the Neurosurgical Spine Program at Saint Louis University Hospital's Center for Cerebrovascular and Skull Base Surgery, the hospital has seen a dramatic increase in the number of minimally-invasive spinal procedures, including lumbar spinal fusion surgery. Abbott announced a definitive agreement with Piramal Healthcare Limited to acquire full ownership of Piramal's Healthcare Solutions business (Domestic Formulations), a leader in the Indian branded generics market, for an up-front payment of $2.12 billion, plus $400 million annually for the next four years, giving Abbott the No. 1 position in the Indian pharmaceutical market.

NeuroTherapeutics Pharma closes $43 million Series B financing round

NeuroTherapeutics Pharma, Inc. (NTP), a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing novel therapies for central nervous system (CNS) disorders, announced today that it closed a $43 million Series B financing. New investors include Fidelity Biosciences, MPM Capital and SR One, who co-led the transaction, and Pfizer, Inc. Existing investors Novo Ventures and Thomas McNerney & Partners also participated in the round.

But a study to be released at a news conference today by researchers from Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore found that a child's autism has no effect on the family structure.

Psychological factors are major predictors of chronic pain in trauma patients, say researchers

Can long-term pain and disability be predicted in individuals recovering from non-life-threatening orthopedic injuries? A team of Australian researchers writing in The Journal of Pain, the peer review journal of the American Pain Society, www.ampainsoc.org, says yes and believes psychological factors, such as pessimism about recovery and depression, are major predictors of chronic pain in trauma patients.

Novartis to pay additional $250 million for gender discrimination inflicted on 5,600 working women

After delivering a unanimous verdict against Novartis on all counts and awarding 12 former Novartis sales reps $3.36 million in compensatory damages yesterday, a New York jury today delivered a stronger dose of the same medicine. Announcing the amount of punitive damages to be awarded, the jury determined that Novartis must pay an additional $250 million for the gender discrimination it inflicted on 5,600 working women in the class. The case was the largest gender discrimination matter ever to go to verdict in the U.S.
