Feds will pay the bulk of Medicaid expansion costs under overhaul, study finds

"As states complain about the burden of expanding health care to millions of poor Americans under the new federal health-care law, a study released Wednesday suggests their claims may be overstated. The issue is the cost of expanding Medicaid ... and the report from the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured says states are likely to reap huge benefits for relatively little cost, and may even end up in the black."

BDSI partners with Kunwha to develop and commercialize BEMA Fentanyl in Republic of Korea

BioDelivery Sciences International, Inc. announced that it has entered into a license and supply agreement with Kunwha Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., for the exclusive rights to develop and commercialize BEMA Fentanyl (marketed as ONSOLIS in the U.S.) in the Republic of Korea. The agreement results in potential milestone payments to BDSI of up to $1,275,000, which includes an upfront payment of $300,000. In addition, BDSI will receive an ongoing royalty based on net sales.

Head Start Dental Home Initiative launched to benefit low-income children in Illinois

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry today announces the launch of its Head Start Dental Home Initiative to benefit the one-in-three low-income children in the state of Illinois. The Initiative links children participating in Head Start programs to local dentists who will provide children with a "dental home" which will ensure that each child's oral health care is delivered in a comprehensive, ongoing, accessible, coordinated and family-centered way by a participating dentist.

Drug and dosage influence risk of GI bleeding

A study conducted at the Spanish Centre for Pharmacoepidemiological Research revealed that the risk of gastrointestinal complications due to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use varies by specific NSAID administered and by dosage. The study further determined that NSAIDs with a long half-life or slow-release formulation are associated with a greater risk of GI bleeding or perforation.

Feds crack down on health care fraud in California, Florida

The Sacramento Bee reports: "Three Sacramento-area residents are among 11 people, including five doctors, accused of participating in a Medicare fraud ring. ... From February 2006 through August 2008, the defendants are alleged to have operated three health-care clinics -- in Sacramento, Carmichael and Richmond -- that submitted more than $5 million in allegedly fraudulent claims to Medicare" (Locke, 5/25).

FDA accepts Horizon Pharma's DUEXA NDA for review
